Expense Journal

How to start

Download an Excel file of your transactions from your card company, upload it to the Expense Journal, and the rest happens on its own.

How to download your transactions file

It works about the same at every card company: sign in to your personal area, open the month's transaction details and export to Excel. Choose your company:

Max

  1. Sign in to your personal area on the Max website (username and password, or your ID number and a one-time code sent to your phone).
  2. Open "פירוט חיובים ועסקאות" (charges and transaction details).
  3. Choose the month and the card (or all cards).
  4. Click the export-to-Excel icon on the details page and save the file.

  2. Under "המידע שלי" (my information), open "פירוט חיובים ועסקאות" (charges and transaction details).
  3. Choose the billing month. You can go back up to two years.

Cal

  1. Sign in to your personal area on the Cal website (your ID number, the last 4 digits of the card and a one-time code by SMS or WhatsApp, or a username and password).
  2. Click your card (with several cards, first click "פירוט", details) to reach "פירוט עסקאות" (transaction details).
  3. Choose the billing date. You can go back about a year and a half.
  4. Click export to Excel and save the file. The Cal app can export too.

Good to know

  • Download one file per month (and per card, if you have several). You can upload them all at once.
  • Choose months that were already billed. "Future charges" can still change.
  • The journal reads .xlsx files. If the file you downloaded ends in .xls, open it in Excel or Google Sheets and save it as .xlsx.
  • Can't find the export button on your phone? Try on a computer, where it's usually available.
  • Card companies change their websites from time to time. If something looks different, look for "transaction details" and an Excel or download icon.

How to use the Expense Journal

  1. Upload your files

Drag the files to the upload area or press "Upload files". Several files at once are fine. If some transactions were already uploaded (usually from statements that overlap), the journal offers to move the duplicates to the trash, so they aren't counted twice.

  2. Categorize businesses

A business without a category goes to "Miscellaneous". Categorize it once, and all its transactions follow, in future files too.

  3. See the big picture

SuperView shows all your months on one line; choose a range (the last 3, 6 or 12 months, this year or all time). The cards below show your trend, top businesses, subscriptions and recurring charges, and more.

  4. Open a month

Click a month to see its categories, the spending chart and the Transactions tab, where you can search, add a note to a transaction or add an expense by hand (a cash payment, for example). "Export this period" downloads a tidy report.

  5. Set budgets

Set a monthly amount for categories, businesses or both, and see how much is left and when you go over.

  6. Compare periods

"Compare" puts periods of your choice side by side, for example the last three months against the three before.

  7. Tidy up categories

Check the categories you want to combine and press "Merge selected categories". Click a category's name to rename it.

  8. Delete and restore

Deleted transactions go to the trash, and you can restore them until you delete them permanently. You can also delete a whole file with its transactions.

Ready? The first file takes a minute.
